Is tipping obligatory in Morocco?

Tipping stays customary in Morocco, never obligatory. Moroccans call it pourboire or bakchich depending on context, a word covering any gratuity handed over in person for a service rendered. Skipping it is never treated as an incident.

How much do you give a driver, based on trip length?

An airport transfer calls for 30 MAD, a full day for 100 MAD and a multi-day circuit for 150 MAD per day on the road. The amount rises with time spent with the same driver, not with distance covered.

When is a tip not owed in Morocco?

A service already billed as a service charge calls for no extra tip, as happens in some Guéliz restaurants that add it to the bill. A driver who is repeatedly late or careless creates no obligation to tip.

Do you tip in dirhams or in euros?

Tips are given in dirhams, never in euros. Euro coins cannot be exchanged at any bank or currency office in Morocco; only euro notes are accepted there. A driver therefore receives dirhams in cash, at the end of the service.

Who else is customarily tipped in Morocco besides the driver?

The local guide, the baggage porter, the waiter, the riad housekeeper and the parking attendant are all customarily tipped too. Each follows an amount specific to their service, set out line by line in the table above.

How does this tip fit into the rest of the trip?

A driver’s tip sits on top of the trip fare, which is fixed per vehicle rather than per passenger on chauffeured hire. The full rates sit on the dedicated page.

This tip is only one line in the wider budget for a Morocco trip, where every item is costed on the page devoted to trip budgeting. The drivers themselves, their licence and experience, are introduced on the page devoted to them.

Frequently asked questions

Is the tip included in the price of a private driver?

A private driver’s fare never includes the tip, which stays a separate gratuity. It is handed over in person at the end of the service, in cash, never by transfer or added to the invoice.

Does every relay driver on a circuit get a separate tip?

Each driver who takes over on a circuit receives their own tip, worked out pro rata to the days driven. A 6-day circuit split between two drivers at 3 days each calls for 450 MAD per driver, at 150 MAD a day.

Does a guide’s tip change with the length of the visit?

A local guide takes 50 MAD for a half-day visit, an amount that doubles for a full-day excursion. A guide accompanying a multi-day circuit receives a rate negotiated directly with the traveller.

Does the parking attendant really need a tip?

The parking attendant, recognisable by a vest and a ticket book, takes 5 MAD per stay. The practice guards the vehicle against scratches and minor theft, an informal safeguard common across Moroccan cities.

Does riad staff expect a tip for every service?

A riad housekeeper takes 20 MAD a night, left in the room on departure, a custom closer to the one followed in international hotels. Riad restaurant staff, in turn, follow the usual restaurant tipping practice.
