Can you hire a self-drive minibus in Morocco?

Self-drive minibus hire does not exist in Morocco for tourist use. Dahir n° 1-63-260 governs tourist passenger transport and requires a nominative licence. This frame requires a driver holding a category D licence and the professional driver’s card, issued by the Ministry of Transport and Logistics.

How can you drive yourself around Morocco in a minibus?

A minivan of up to 9 seats can be self-driven through an ordinary car-rental company, under car-hire rules rather than tourist transport law. A category B licence covers up to 9 seats, driver included. Above 9 seats, a category D licence becomes mandatory.

  • Hire a vehicle of 9 seats or fewer from an ordinary car-rental company
  • Present a category B licence at pickup
  • Book a licensed driver for a 12- or 15-seat minibus
  • Compare the real cost before choosing self-drive

How much does a minibus with a driver cost, the real alternative?

A minibus with a driver costs from €25 for an airport transfer in a 7-seat van, against €18 for a transfer within Marrakech itself. These rates cover the driver, fuel and tolls, per vehicle rather than per passenger.

Why is a driver the realistic option in Morocco?

Self-driving a 9-seat minivan costs 350 to 500 MAD a day, before fuel, tolls, parking and the client’s own driving time. A 9-seat minibus with a driver costs €85 a day, all included. A professional driver becomes the realistic option from the first loaded trip.

A category B licence covers a vehicle of 9 seats in total, driver included, which matches the self-driven 9-seat minivan.

Above 9 seats, Moroccan traffic law requires a category D licence and the professional driver’s card, which most tourists do not hold.

The daily rate ignores the time the client spends driving. On mountain roads such as the Tizi n’Tichka, at 2,260 metres, an included driver leaves the client free for the whole trip.

Frequently asked questions

Which licence do you need to drive a minibus in Morocco?

Can a foreign tourist hire a self-drive car in Morocco?

Yes, up to 9 seats in total. Ordinary car-rental companies accept a valid foreign licence with a passport. This regime stays separate from tourist passenger transport, which requires a professional driver above 9 seats.
