What is there to see on an Agafay Desert trip?

Agafay brings together three things: a grey-ochre marl plateau, the High Atlas skyline 40 km to the south, and the Lalla Takerkoust reservoir 12 km to the west. There are no sand dunes.

The marl plateau

Agafay is a hamada — a desert of stone and compacted clay, not an erg of sand. Its rounded hills top out at 700 m and are cut by riverbeds that are dry eleven months of the year.

The rock shifts from grey to pink between midday and sunset, which is why most visits happen in the late afternoon.

The High Atlas skyline

From the Agafay ridges the High Atlas range spreads due south across 90 km. Jbel Toubkal, 4,167 m, is visible in clear weather from November to May and snow-covered from December to April.

Lalla Takerkoust reservoir

This dam on the Nfis river, built in 1935, lies 12 km west of the plateau. Adding Takerkoust to an Agafay day extends the drive by 25 minutes at most.

How long does it take to reach Agafay from Marrakech?

It takes 45 minutes to cover the 30 km between Marrakech and the Agafay plateau. The route runs 26 km of tarmac on the R203, then 4 km of graded track to the camps.

It is the closest destination on our departure board. An evening return uses only 1 h 30 of driving in total.

The final 4 km of track is passable in a 9-seater minibus all year. After a storm it needs a 4×4 for 24 to 48 hours.

How much does an Agafay Desert trip cost?

Private transport costs €70 per vehicle in a 7-seater van and €80 in a 9-seater minibus, driver and fuel included. Dinner at the camp is paid on site, 250 to 450 MAD per person.

The price covers the return transport and the driver waiting through the five hours spent at the camp. It does not include dinner, the activities or camp entry.

A camel ride costs 150 MAD an hour, a quad bike 400 MAD an hour. Both are booked directly with the camp.

Shared transport does not exist at Agafay: the camps are spread over 15 km of plateau and each has its own access track.

When is the best time to visit Agafay?

October to April. Afternoon temperatures stay between 18 and 27 °C and the Atlas is under snow. In July and August the plateau passes 42 °C before 18:00 and only the evening is worthwhile.

Winter nights drop to 3 °C on the plateau. The camps supply blankets, but not jackets.

Rain falls on an average of 12 days a year, concentrated between November and March. One downpour makes the access track impassable for 24 hours.

What should you bring to Agafay?

Bring a jacket, closed shoes, water, a head torch and cash. The temperature drops 15 °C between sunset and 21:00, and the camps do not take cards. Camps supply blankets for the night but not jackets, so a warm layer stays essential.

  • Windproof jacket, even in summer
  • Closed shoes for walking on loose stone
  • Water, 1.5 litres per person
  • Head torch for the walk back to the car park
  • Cash in dirhams for dinner and activities
  • Factor 50 sunscreen for the daytime format

Which vehicle suits the Agafay trip?

The 9-seater minibus suits most groups: it takes the 4 km of graded track without difficulty. Above 12 passengers the 15-seater also gets through, but more slowly over the last 800 metres.

Which day trips combine with Agafay?

Two neighbouring trips fit into the same day: Lalla Takerkoust reservoir, 12 km away, and the Ourika Valley, 55 km via the Tahannaout road. The Merzouga desert is the three-day Saharan version.

Frequently asked questions

Are there sand dunes at Agafay?

No. Agafay is a stone desert, a hamada of marl and clay. The nearest sand dunes are those of Erg Chebbi at Merzouga, 561 km further east. Reaching Merzouga by minibus takes 8 hours 40 minutes along the N9, N10 and N13.

Can you sleep in the Agafay Desert?

Yes, around twenty camps offer overnight tents. Expect 600 to 2,500 MAD per person depending on the standard. We run the outbound leg the evening before and the return the next morning for €110 in a 9-seater.

Does the Agafay trip suit children?

Yes, from age 3. The 45-minute drive avoids travel sickness, unlike the mountain roads. Child seats are supplied at no extra charge, with three Isofix anchor points on the second row of the 9-seater minibus.

No. Private transport costs €70 to €120 per vehicle. Dinner at the camp is paid on site, 250 to 450 MAD per person depending on the venue. A camel ride costs 150 MAD an hour, a quad bike 400 MAD, both paid at the camp.
